Furious, Kelsey confronts her father and leaves for a trip to meet this woman that had been cut from her life. There, Kelsey discovers an entirely new world--the horse world, and she gets sucked in. She finds her mother isn't so bad, and she finds Gabe--the gambling neighbor and their competition. And while they are becoming involved, bad things start happening. Accidents with jockeys and workers and the horses themselves that bring back memories of twenty years before when Kelsey's mother had been in the same position, only her lover had ended up dead, and she'd wound up in prison. Kelsey and Gabe rush to find out what's going on...and stumble upon the truth of what happened years ago."

As Kelsey and Gabe get closer, they are suddenly thrown in the center of investigations, along with Naomi, her mother, when two men and a horse are killed. Kelsey learns to accept who she is and finds her place in the horse racing world she now lives in, and together she and Gabe set out to prove how her mother only killed in self-defense. "
