1. Favorite book and why?
The Good Mother. It was gripping. We could taste the sweetness of the mother's devotion and the daughter's innocence--and we could quicken with her as she became conscious of her hunger for passion in a life that had been dry, duty-bound, devoid of spontenaity and warmth.
The well-meant but ill-fated judgement of the man who was her lover and the way that the characters basically damaged (and transformed) one another in the name of love was like watching a morality play. The movie, in my opinion, failed to do the book justice.

7. What do you like about author's writing style?
Sue Miller weaves vivid portraits of complex interrelationships in families, respecting all of the subtleties and resisting the tempation to vilify even the darkest of her characters. Through her books the reader learns that everyone has his or her own story to tell; the mystery lies nestled within the vicissitudes of individidual choice, historical context, nobility and meanness in the human psyche, and the interplay of the divine and demonic.
In listening to her stories, I encounter myself again and again--sometimes with delighted recognition, sometimes with chagrin, and sometimes with a profound and delicious sadness that reminds me of the fragility and the grace weave together to form my own stories.

8. What are your favorite themes of this author?
Family relationships and subtle questions about human morality as it dances with the societal norms that dictate current legal questions of rightness and wrongness--Miller's skill in creating characters that aren't always easy to like, and yet sing through her pages with authenticity and pathos.
