We've been trying to figure that out for years. Part of it may be that a more nervous US garrisoned the islands with more than 2 divisions, so a ground landing was less practical even if you did wipe out the enemy fleet. Another part was that the Japanese didn't take out the US fleet or land-based air so their landing craft might take an intolerable beating -- no land invasion 'til you take out US sea and air power. But the thing that got to me was that Japan never seemed to have more than one or two carriers available, when OTL they used 6 at Pearl Harbor and 4 at Midway. Why did they have such a smaller navy? Was it because no Washington Naval limitation treaty meant that they could blow all their money on useless battleships? Was the army sucking up more budget for the land war in Asia and possible moves against European posessions in the far east? We don't know and HT didn't give many hints.

One thing that confuses me is the inconsistency between the Southern Victory novel's Japan and the Japan in "Days of Infamy". If Japan was capable of capturing Hawaii with its real life forces in Days of Infamy, why couldn't the much stronger Japan of TL-191 do it?

Do they also sanely and realistically discuss George Bush's likely third term policies there?

I've finally found a sane, rational board where people realistically discuss the continuation of the series. It's called the Better Board and it's an ez board site. I post there as flash316, come check it out.
