I am saddened to hear of Ms. Brauns passing.
I have truly enjoyed her books and found KoKo Yum Yum and Jim as entertaining as can be.
I have read the complete series of books many times over. I still find them as entertaining and funny as the first time. I will miss any new additions. My condolences to her family and thank you for the hours of enjoyment i received from the cat who... series.

I am a huge fan of Ms. Braun. Her passing was like losing a good friend. I just hope someday her last book will be finished. I just hope that it will answer all our questions in "TCW Had 60 Whiskers".

I would love to see a good writer deal with this plot for _Lilian Jackson Braun's The Cat Who Smelled Smoke by Whoever_:
Qwill takes Koko out on leash to inspect the burned ruins of the barn. While there, Koko finds a poker chip that isn't even scorched. It looks like it was left there deliberately. It turns out that the barn was burned by the people in New Jersey who would have inherited the Klingenschoen fortune if Qwill had not. These people have also kidnapped Polly and are holding her in Europe; they also caused the accident that detained her there in the first place. Remember that Polly never called anyone on the phone before walking away from her entire life? She wrote all instructions for the disposition of her affairs, including rehoming Brutus and Catta instead of having them sent to her. The point of all this is to intimidate Qwill into turning his fortune over to the New Jersey contingent, whose gambling revenues are suffering in a bad economy.
Koko is instrumental in finding the perpetrators and bringing them to justice, though I have no idea how that would happen. Polly is freed unharmed and returns to Moose County. The fear of losing her forever finally overcomes Qwill's aversion to remarriage, and he and Polly are married in grand Pickax style.
A subplot for comic relief would be to have a moose give birth in Amanda Goodwinter's front yard and refuse to leave (this was something that was going around the Internet a few years ago, but it wasn't true). That would help to set up the final scene. Qwill and Polly are in whatever residence they're going to share. Qwill carries Polly into the bedroom and shuts the door. Koko and Yum Yum are in one window of the living room and Brutus and Catta (who've been reunited with Polly) are in another, watching the world go by. They see the mother and baby moose making their way into the forest. End of book. End of series.
Are there any good writers out there who'd like to take this to Putnam?

I hate that that was the last book she wrote. The smoke one was cancelled per the publishers information. I thought that Quill's friend had moved I forgot that the barn burned in that book. I may have to reread that one. What a disappointment that there will not be another one. 8-(

Kitty, you're referring to 'The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers,' which featured all but one of those plot features; neither of Qwill's cats died. The book was a big disappointment to most of her readers. People here are asking about the last book the author had in the works before she became too incapacitated to finish, tentatively titled 'The Cat Who Smelled Smoke.' It was offered for preorder on Amazon, then removed when it became evident it would never be published. In a rare interview many years ago, Ms. Braun said Qwill and the cats would never die, and although the series spanned four decades, the man only aged about ten years, and Koko aged even less. If only we could all live in the land of cozy mysteries :-)

The Last Book was printed I know because I read it. I have regretted it ever since. I don't know where or how I got it and I lost it in a move. It was a nightmare.
Q's longtime lady friend moved to England, the barn burned down and at least one of the cats died. Then it just stopped. Very disappointing.

I have All of Mrs Braun's books and have read each of them several times. She was a wonderful writer and will be greatly missed. My sympathies and loving condolences to herdevoted husband, Earl,their beloved Siamese, the rest of her loving family, her MANY friends, her devoted staff, and her MANY fans on her passing.
RIP Lilian Jackson Braun.
You will ALWAYS be loved :)

I had no idea she had passed untill I went looking to find out why there had been no follow up to the last book. I know it takes time to write and publish but it had been a long time. I will miss her and Qwil. Any chance the new book was far enough along a ghost writer could finish in her honor?
