Val, I believe you're looking for "Mrs McGinty's Dead" (Robin Upward was adopted) and "Ordeal by Innocence" (the dead woman was Rachel-something whose children were all adopted).

Please change Austrian to Belgian, in my previous post. Thanks.

I noticed in the information on the main character of "Cards on the Table" that he is listed as German. I think it is safe to assume that Hercule Poirot is the main charactar, and he is Austrian. In many of Agatha's books he is taken for a Frenchman, and each time, he makes the correction that he is Austrian.

I think my favorite "scene" would be the one in which Hercule Poirot reveals to the riders on the Orient Express, that he actually knows who killed the victim, but he is willing to tell the authorities that the murderer was someone who came on to the train from outside, while it was stranded in the snowstorm. In one sense it was totally out of character to conceal his true knowledge, but he felt that a higher justice would be served by giving the authorities the story that an "outsider" had murdered the victim.
