The one due out in May is part of the novella series I believe. The first was At Risk and this one is The Front. A completely different set of characters and obviously much shorter than the Scarpetta books, this new one will be serialized in the London Times first I think. The next Scarpetta based book should be out next fall.

Certainly you're entitled to your opinion Marc-
I happen to disagree and think that her work has gotten better and better. While the switch from 1st to 3rd person may have taken some getting used to, it allows the readers to really delve into the other characters, and not see them only from scarpetta's perspective. A sure sign of growth by an author. I think BOTD was amazing, and loved the twists and turns in the plot--Try to grasp the big picture marc and figure out what story PC is trying to tell you. Good books make you think, and sometimes that require a bit of effort, but the payoff is worth it. Perhaps that's too much for you.

This latest effort by PC is by far the worst of the series. What I regret is that each of her last 3-4 books had been the worst of the series. Each book gets worst. These are no longer mysteries to read, enjoy and figure out. These books have turned into a book form soap opera. The only "plot" for some time now has been about all the problems/conflicts each one has with themselves and with the others in the book. Even the titles now are lame and make little sense. I do not know what has happened for PC to have gone from writing great fiction to what she write now. Hopes that she gets it back real soon.

Responding to the talk of PC switching from first to third person . . . . . I think that started with BLOWFLY. I for one, don't like it as well. BLOWFLY was unusual to me in several ways, so much so that I had the sense she started writing it not as a Scarpetta book but as a book about another young female medical examiner (as though she was thinking of a new series) but then switched it back to a Scarpetta book and then killed off the new young female medical examiner (from Louisiana, maybe). There were a lot of scenes in that book that Scarpetta wasn't in -- including a very unusual scene where Lucy murders Marino's son in cold blood (very strange). My take on that book is that it was close to spinning out of control, compared to her earlier books, and I think the third person style was one of the reasons. . . . . .
The first person style of the earlier Scarpetta books was a deeper experience, also more focused, also more suspenseful and mysterious (I had less of an idea of what was going on around her and that made for a more intense reading experience). . . . All in all I think PC's Scarpetta books are super, but I definitely liked the earlier ones the best, especially the first three, maybe four.

I am a great fan of Patricia Cornwell but I am very disappointed at one thing: In an earlier book of hers,(cant remember the exact book)(point of origin?) Benton Wesley dies, but now in her latest book of Oct 2007, he is very much alive!
This is rather confusing and I am losing my interest in patricia cornwell's books. I followed all her books but I must admit this is really putting me off.
