Anna Fynn Message Board

farrah posts on 2/23/2009 6:30:20 AM I believe Anna is true but maybe Fynn interpreted her thoughts to make the story more spiritual and insightful to the reader,i do think so that is maybe the reason.Coz Fynn want to reach out to the young readers too,and making Anna as the main character would be more interesting and simple though i found the book very profound. Thanks to all!!
Nigel C. Fortune posts on 2/12/2009 4:21:53 PM Hi John S, Thank you for sharing your wonderful insights regarding Syd and life at Finchden Manor. Given that Syd never mentioned Anna at Finchden, do you personally believe she was real, and if not, where do you think the sotry of Mister God, This Is Anna originates from, given that it was published just after the closure of Finchden Manor? Many thanks in advance.
John S posts on 2/11/2009 7:40:09 PM Nightwizard, I can understand your point of view about sudden trauma changing people's lives, but there is another explanation - i.e. how people develop a strategy to cope with an unexpected injury that might blight their lives forever. I believe Syd/Fynn was the same person before and after his accident - he had the inner resources to come to terms with his disability, focussing on what he could still achieve rather than what had been taken away. I also believe Syd's intellectual horizons were widened because of his physical limitations. He also thought of those worse off than himself, and for many years worked hundreds of hours making the most amazing Christmas decorations to be used in childrens' homes across the county (Kent). Many people think Anna is allegorical; Fynn's philosophical or religious rationalization of the circumstances that befell him. Modern society is a tough place to exist in, it's very easy to become cynical about mankind. We would all like to meet someone like Anna, to touch or be touched by an angel; to believe that an accidental meeting with another human being can bring us closer to our God and make our lives more meaningful. I never met Anna, but I did know Syd, for which I will be eternally grateful!

Nightwizard posts on 2/2/2009 8:07:07 AM Well it's just that sometimes after a trauma a person has been known to act differently or even take a new path in life, not because they were bad and deserved to be hurt but rather I believe that a hard shake can sometime literally allow a different entity to enter the body and it's not to say they are coming into perfect circumstances or health, I have toyed with this idea regarding Fynn for years! There is the old story of someone receiving a bump on the head and then they cannot remember who they are so it has been said and yet they can still basically function, read write talk etc! There have been cases of people being in accidents who seemed to take on another personality afterwords!
John S posts on 2/1/2009 11:52:37 PM What happened, as far as I know, is that Syd/Fynn was hit and knocked flying on a railway station platform when a carriage door was flung open as a train pulled in. He had injuries to his pelvis/lower back area, from which he recovered, but found walking very painful and had to rely on using a stick to get around. After some time like this he found it far less painful if he walked about on his knees, which restricted his range, but he found it comfortable. That's how he was when I first met him in 1964. Later, in the early 70s he had some surgery which I suppose either freed a trapped nerve or fused some vertebra, loads of physiotherapy etc, enabling him to walk again pain-free. As you may know, he married his physiotherapist! Hope the above helps.
Nightwizard posts on 1/30/2009 2:29:30 AM John S, I was wondering about the terrible train accident that left Fynn/Sydney partially disabled? there is a special reason why I am asking, hope no one takes it the wrong way? I do have normal compassion for someone badly hurt, there is a special reason why I am asking! Can you tell us all you know concerning this accident?

John S posts on 1/25/2009 6:15:32 PM I don't know the exact cause, but he lived a long time. There are more photos of Syd available on the finchden site forward slash fynn. I'm sure you will know how to see them.
farrah posts on 1/24/2009 3:44:39 AM Again may i know what was the caused of Fynn death?
John S posts on 1/11/2009 11:56:54 AM Anna was never discussed by Syd at Finchden. The book was published after the place closed down in 1973. A couple of years ago a lady from Poland made contact, asking the same questions. Syd's widow preferred to keep a low profile.
