i have been avidly reading wilburs books for over 30 years i have everyone of them in my personal library. i have felt the quality slipping for a while but can not believe that someone who could write when the lion feeds or sunbird amongst so many could write such a woeful book. he surely can't need the money. i never been able to resist buying his books but this could well be the last. how sad but i guess all good things come to an end. wish he had an email address.

New reader of WS's books. Just finished the River God Wow! can someone please tell me which order I should read the rest of them before I spoil my read. Adore anything Ancient Egyptian(ish) any suggestions are most welcome

I agree with you Ren. The Quest is a sad tail end to a great career. I have read all of WS's books, and know his work and style well, and there is something very wrong in The Quest. His story is inconsistant, the supernatural aspect is an insult to his readership, and if I have to read one more sad sexual fantasy of an elderly viagra taker I think I will just put the book down. I think the time has come for him to give up. Actually his books dtarted deteriorating after Danielle died, makes one wonder how much of it was influenced or editied by her.

Like most of us Ive been hanging out for the next W S novel having read every one so far ( I was hooked by The Sunbird, even took a day off work (sickie)to finish it) Ive just started reading The Quest, in fact Im only about 30 pages into it however as I read and although I recognise the characters, it feels different somehow?? My immediate thought was, did W S write this, at least on his own?? I just wondered if anyone else felt the same? I realise styles change and there is possibly an age factor (to be expected). He is my favorite author by a mile.

I feel ya dude... trust me i do! i have about 2 dozen Wilbur books, including all the the Courtney series.
It's understandable that he slowed down though, he's pushing 80 very soon, but I believe he won't retire. Wilbur will probably be on his death bed and die before he retires.

I suspect that many of us who've been Wilbur Smith fans for years are experiencing a sense of withdrawal or deprivation now that he's slowed to a book every two years. In the past he was so prolific that one knew another "fix" would soon arrive, always less than a year. It's a long wait now, leaving only the re-reading of past favorites to tide us over. I sometimes dread the day when we'll learn that Wilbur has decided to retire. What will we do but mourn the loss of a wonderful, harmless pleasure, and a friend we've come to depend on?

Boy, this forums sure died down all waiting for the new book huh. The quest due 6 April next year. 4th in the Egyptian series. Wilbur seems excited about it so thats gotta be good. Still wish someone would attempt a major picture from one of the 90's epics. Africa seems to have such a raw soulful appeal to it though Ive never been there. Must start on that one...
