Alyson West wrote asking about Northern Scotland and the heroine Alison Campbell. The Mary Stewart books in the county library and the audiotapes purchased on eBay have different heroines in each book. No series characters, I think.
I second the rave on Josephine Tey's books, any and all, but particularly 'Miss Pym Disposes' and 'Brat Farrar'. This is something that Mary Stewart does well - her heroines are always reading, book titles are mentioned and then you want to immediately read those books yourself. Nice!

I've enjoyed everything I've read by Mary Stewart. I don't know which books are on tape, but a few to look for are "Madam Will You Talk", "This Rough Magic", "My Brother Michael", and "Airs Above the Ground".

I just finished listening to the audiotape version of The Gabriel Hounds, which is the first Mary Stewart book I've heard or read. The first three chapters didn't seem worth the time, but the narrator Davinia Porter did her usual wonderous reading, and by the middle of the book I was totally entranced. The last two of chapters were especially hair raising and yet very moving. I particularly admired Stewart's decriptions of the ancient Lebanese harem garden and the birds and creatures who lived there. Has anyone else read this book? Would you recommend any other of her books for nature descriptions? I listen to books more than read them, due to eye troubles.

Can anyone tell me if this is the same MARY Stewart who wrote the books around the heroine Alison Campbell - a delightful series of books set in Northern Scotland, which I read with great enthusiasm as a child.

Mary asked about a book about Richard III. Josephine Tey wrote 'The Daughter of Time', a great book about Richard III written in 1951 and set in that time as a detective novel. Much much better than it sounds! Link with Mary Stewart is mention of Tey's book 'Brat Farrar' in Stewart's 'The Ivy Tree', at least in the British edition. Hope this helps.

The name of the book Lady Jane was referring to by Elizabeth Peters is "The Murders of Richard the Third". An entertaining read.

What kind of book. There was a mystery book published by Elizabeth Peters about the controversy surrounding Richard the Third and a murder mystery party.
