The Pearl was great but oh so depressing...It's surprising how one "blessing" can totally ruin someone's life.

I LOVED East of Eden and was mesmerized by The Grapes of Wrath; can anyone suggest Steinbeck's next best novel?

I believe Kino's transformation comes from the bad guys' actions against him once he gets the pearl. The death of his son by the end of the story is the punchline for this transformation.
Kino is, before he finds the pearl, a family man, but once he's "possessed" by the pearl he seems to forget about his family's welfare in order to get more money for them selling the gem -paradoxically-. He's back as family man when his beloved son perishes.

Steinbeck is a classic!! Loved East of Eden. I thought the movie was cheesy. I'm wishing for a new and improved East of Eden movie- one that is closer to the book. Loved Of Mice and Men-good book and good movie. I have not read Grapes of Wrath-may be the only person on the planet who hasn't read it--Any suggestions? Any favorites?
