Were Sam and Frodo, and Gimli and Legolas, secret lovebirds? Message Board

Post to this discussion forum - J.R.R. Tolkien book reviews

Look, I don't usually look for things that aren't there, but didn't you think it was just a little bit odd that Sam was always kissing Frodo's hand, or touching his brow, or calling him, "Master?" What exactly was Frodo to Sam--his employer, right? Frodo wasn't a king, and yet Sam acted like a Servant, or, in some cases, a paramour. You didn't see Gandalf kissing anyone's hand, or Elrond kissing anyone's hand. I mean, I know JRR was British, and maybe they do that sort of thing in England, but still it seems strange.

Another thing--why was Sam so keen on going to Mordor with Frodo? It seemed mighty dangerous. Even if Sam liked him as an employer, or a friend, going to Mordor was more than just a "friend" kind of thing to do. The only explanation I can think of is that he had a special attachment to Frodo. Lovers? You decide.

And what about Gimli and Legolas? Ok, in the first part of the trilogy they weren't exactly buddies, but that quickly changed; by the end of the third book, they were together so much, "friend Gimli" this and "friend Legolas" that, worrying about each other when they weren't in eye contact, that I just thought, "Hey, guys, why don't you get a room!" You also notice how Gimli and Legolas never got married? Do you think that would make sense… if they were already married to each other?

Come to think of it, didn't you think it just the tiniest bit odd that unmarried Bilbo invites Frodo, a young boy, to move in with him? Other hobbits called this "queer". What exactly was going on there?

Are you serious...! The idea of Legolas and Gimli being extremely good friends is that they're finally bringing back the old treaty between elves and dwarves. Each of them at the first hated the other race as they had been brought up to for the last age or so, so their friendship not only is supposed to show that even if your opposites, you can still enjoy eachother immensely- But that the conflict between elf and dwarf is finally coming to an end. Anyway, I have to agree, who does posts these questions...? W/e, cheers!

While Legolas & Gimli don't have anything sexual going on, they do have something transending your average friendship.

The relationship twixt Sam and Frodo was simply very close friends. As they cleared this momentous time in their life.. well, it's simply something that no two friends would be able to go through without changing...becoming closer. As to the other two... well, Legolas would make a wonderful wife, don't you think? Tolkien, I don't think, would have purposefully written these relationships into his stories, but I think subconciously, he did. Gimli and Legolas spent the rest of their days together, and whether they were physical lovers, they definitly loved each other. To the point of showing each other their worlds... Gimli his caves, Legolas his trees.

You cannot be serious, they are characters in a book. A great book series. Tolken would be turning over in his grave if he thought you would think he would write such behaviors into his characters. They are fiction, were never alive and only did what he wrote that they did.

You have to remember,,Tolkien wrote these books in a time when camradarie and affection went hand in hand. Devotion to a friend, master, ally or fellow soldier is normal and honest. If anyone has ever seen Bridge on the River Kwai...the British soldiers put on a play,,(and someone had to play the female roles) .. comfort and affection during times of stress; be it combat or trying to WALK to certain death in Mordor are times when the comfort of another person (any person) is a perfectly normal response. I myself have laughed at the so called "homo-eroticism" of LOTR,,,but in all fairness I think Tolkien was just trying to stress the huge amount of strain put upon these people. If I knew I was headed to certain death...Id probably want a hug also....

Don't forget that the good proffessor was a devout Catholic. Its highly unlikely that the idea that any of the characters could even possibly be gay ever crossed his mind- and he probably would have stamped on it if it had. Also, don't forget that the story and the messages that it imparts are over 50 years old, and based on ancient mythology. Perhaps it never occurred to people 50 years ago that showing any emotion at all, or ever having a friend instantly meant you were gay...honestly, girls kiss each other all the time and that doesn't make them lesbians- C.S Lewis in the Narnia Chronicles (I think it was in Prince Caspian) has High King Peter kiss another male, and explains that there was nothing girly about it because he was a King....and even if the characters were intended to be homosexual, why do you people care so much? Its not like it makes them any different.

I don't know who makes up these dumb subjects, but they are really, well DUMB. Ok at the end of ROTK Sam and frodo did act a little gay, but hey it's so Hollywood. As for Legolas and Gimli there wasn't even the slightest hint of being gay. Some people just have really twisted thinking.

Okay I gotta say in Return of the King Sam wasn't looking at the one ring. No he was looking at Frodo shirtless, it was turning him on... He carried him up the mountain, to take advantage of him at the top where no one could see... There we're too many hot elf chicks for Legolas to be gay... Gimli on the other hand spoke of how dwarf women have beards too... That's a definite turn off, so I get mixed opinions on him, basically I'm almost positive he's gay... Now the actor who plays Gandlaf really is Gay, and he admitted it. The truth hurts, but it's the truth.

I changed my mind. They were NOT gay. I mean kids kiss their mothers good night, that doesn't make them gay. Besides, back then, it was a sign of respect.Plus, look at how Europeans greet, they kiss each other on each cheek.
