i CAN'T READ this book, it's way too boring. i have to write an essay and need some input. How does hawkeye function as an american icon? can we see him as an underlying american ideal? what makes him so?

This novel was so bad that I couldn't wait for the trapper to die.

I am also looking for something like Cliff Notes for this book. I'm a 50-year-old graduate student and read all the time. This book is very tedious to read, because Cooper spends so much time describing things that the story gets lost. The language is hard to follow. It also starts out VERY slowly. I find Richard irritating because he thinks he's so wonderful and he's really very full of it. Then there's Ben Pump. Could anyone be more annoying? I never knew that you could compare everything to something on a ship. Geez! So, if anyone knows of a source of a Cliff note type thing, please e-mail me and tell me about it. Meanwhile, I'll keep reading and hope that now that it's spring in the book, the plot will progress some English teacher – you really shouldn't make your kids read this one. It might turn them off reading all together. Oh yeah, I'm a high school teacher, too.

When Captain Warley says, "...I'm as stupid as one of those Dutch parsons on the Mohawk", to whom is he referring? I have searched the history and cannot come to a conclusion. Thank you. P.S. Why do you allow such debased reader's comments about Deerslayer to be published on your board?

Anyone who puts down this classic is not giving it the time of day or simply does not read good literature. This book is beautifully written, is not abstract like so many books today, and is a clean, exciting read. I think that Cooper has given an incredible contribution to American literature by writing Deerslayer.
