Out of the Dust creates a vivid picture of the Dust Bowl through the eyes of its heroine. The author's choice of format, a journal written in free verse poetry, is simple yet extremely effective in portraying life during this time through one girl's experiences. Though fictional, this account retains the feel of a biography and leaves the reader with a sense of having lived the story. Billie Jo's emotions and reactions are so well conveyed that the reader can easily relate and empathize with the character. This book is vivid in some of its description and, though it was intended and written for the elementary students, I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone younger. The meaning would be lost and some of the experiences disturbing to those younger and with, perhaps, less maturity or understanding. I would HIGHLY recommend it to sixth grade students or anyone older. I must say that the story really made me feel more than blessed for everything that I have. Billy Jo portrayed a very simple yet precious character that made the readers attached to her and to her great dreams. The novel appears to be very simple and plain but once you have started reading it, the heart warming flow of the free versed poem quickly draw you until you just find your self finishing it. The novel is actually all about life… not just of a 14 year old girl like Billy Jo but of all the children around the world that suffer the same problems that Billy had 0once fought. It shows how important a family is especially to a child as young as Billy. It gives people hope and inspiration to continue each battle and to keep on fighting.
