This is the second time I've tried to post this, to answer some questions: Leo and "Gunk" Mulhall, brothers, were friends of mine. My brother and I used to bar hop with them. Gunk is dead now, but Leo is still alive. A great guy. Sorry, no plans to write another navy novel. I'm doing a series of mystery novels under the name Anne Argula. See www.litpair.com Mary Ann lives near you. You can contact her son, Scott, at fsponicsan@aol.com

I was wondering about the character from the last detail, Mulhall. My family came from the coal regions of Schuylkill County, Mahanoy city and surrounding areas. Did you, Darryl Ponicsan know any Mulhall's? It is not a common name. Could it possibly been one of my relatives. My father Donald Jr. was in the navy.

Hi Darryl, my name is Mindy Gerber. I grew up across the street from your brother Ron and Mary Ann and Mark and Scott (I used to babysit for Mark and Scott). Your sister in law Mary Ann is the reason I became a Registered Nurse almost 30 yrs ago. I cried a river when Ron passed away. Mary Ann was like a Mother to me after my parent's divorce. I would love to reach her but have lost touch. I live in E. Windosr, N.J. (609) 443-6780. I would love to hear from her. Mindy

To Ann, who posted on 2/13/05, who wonders if her father was the inspiration for The Last Detail. In the early 60s I was in transit on the USS Intrepid. I met and spent time with a 1st class petty officer whose name I've forgotten. He was old to me, but was probably only in his 40s then. He told me of a time when he had to transport a young prisoner from Corpus Christi to Portsmouth to serve an unfair sentence. He and his partner felt sorry for him and tried to show him one last good time. Was that your father? I really don't know. All I remember is that he was a big man, very friendly, very decent.

When watching The Last Detail with Jack Nicholson, my brother said he remembered a story my father told similar to the plot of this story. We're wondering where Daryl got his inspiration for this story. Our dad passed away 20 years ago but, we sure have been reminded of a great story he once told. We'd love to know, just for fun. Is it possible to find out? Ann
