Method for Madness looks like it has been pushed to Nov 1, 2012. Maybe D.G. is hoping for the end of the world so he doesn't actually have to finish.

Years ago I suggested to him that he turn the remainder of the series into a shared universe, similar to the Kzin stories. [after all, he himself has sprinkled reference to the Chtorr across several of his other books]. But, of course, he nixed that. Can hardly blame him - it's an opus, if not his magnum opus, and he's not going to rush it or turn it loose. As for an ending, I suspect that part of AMFM is the grisly end or chtorraforming of Liz and their unborn child. Dg has, as microcosmic God, stomped other principles to mush, scraped them off his shoe, and carried on w/the story line. But, I suspect, this one's a leeetle bit tougher. After all, she's a dominatrix w/a chocolate fix...

Try the other David-- David Drake. He writes really good stuff with new books about every six months. He is one of the most prolific authors I know, and his writing is far less turgid than DG's.

dg has been "close" to completing the book with repeated regularity for a decade. Every so often we see hopeful signs, such as a proposed publication date that is 6-12 months out, or dribs and drabs of the 5th book (he released a small section some time back, and has published another small piece in a collection book). If you told me that a friend had entered a doctoral program this semester, I'd bet against dg finishing the 5th book BEFORE the student finished the doctorate (even after 10 years Ph.D. completion rates are around only 60%). The best advice is to not hold your breath or get too excited about "official release dates" (unless of course that's your thing). I'd suggest finding another author who writes a lot to get involved in.

Unfortunately, that's correct. A publication date of more than 6 months is simply a guess. Once you get inside of that time frame, USUALLY the manuscript has been turned in and the editing and printing is underway. Still, we abide and thanks for the information. If you hear anything else, please post it here.

This is not the first time, nor likely the last, that we will see a publication date that is likely just a hopeful guess. DG has disappeared from his website once again, and there has not been the slightest suggestion that any real progress has been made on THE BOOK. So unless someone knows that he has handed in a completed draft, I would read nothing into that publication date.

Looks like A Method for Madness release date is July 2011 according to Amazon

Alobar, thanks for the correction. I have no clue what I was thinking of. Especially since I've read Starship Troopers at least 3 times.

Starship Troopers is the Heinlein book that is the most similar to the Chtorr books, but I would agree with the other entries about dipping your hand into some of his lighter reads first to get the "flavor" of Heinlein. Also remember to allow for the age of his works--classics, and should be read as such. Oh, and as to which came first: Starship Troopers was written in 1959, just point of fact.

IMHO, Heinlein's very best two books are Time Enough For Love and it's sequel To Sail Beyond the Sunset. They both feature his greatest character Lazarus Long.
