I have not read BD Hyman's book, but I have been reading a great deal about her mother, a complicated woman of great talent who fought valiently with her own 'demons'. Of particular interest have been the interviews BD Hyman participated in just after writing her book. She could not sense that people were somewhat skeptical of her reasons for writing the book and that it was also percieved as incredibly bad timing on BD's part. BD claims that she wrote the book to somehow 'reach' her mother as nothing else had allowed her to do so - well, mother and daughter remained estranged until Bette Davis died so how she thought this would bring them closer, I cannot imagine. I cannot think of a poorer way to 'get through' to someone who obviously adores you than to write a 'tell all' indictment of that person. Bette Davis, of course, was not a perfect person as none of us are, but her daughter chose to capitalize on her name by claiming Bette inteferred with her life - honey, all mothers have issues with this - you might want to read, "My Mother, Myself". BD was an adult with adult complaints so she should have acted like one and sorted out the relationship in private. I only hope the cruelty of what Bette had perceived all her life as her devoted daughter was not the last thought in her mind as she passed. If I were BD, it would be natural to go into 'God's work'- where else will she find absolution for doing something like this?

Hmmmm..I smell a rat.First Christina Crawford and then BD. These two brats smelled m-o-n-e-y. They quickly rose to the occasion even if it meant selling their souls and destroying their moms feelings. No wonder alligators eat their young! Bette and Joan should have taken a lesson....

And now BD teams with another person who realized she too could make money using Bettes name and trashing her too.BD is also quoted in the book...Bette Davis..Barbara Leaning....maybe teamed up? Also, Bettes "supposed " best friend gives her trashy memories...with friends like that who needs enemies? You ALL have to face God one day which is good..as a Christian you forgot one commandment..honor thy mother.....and he put it BEFORE thou shalt not kill...that's how important it was...PS..burned the "supposed" Bette Bio and paid for the book at the library...wasn't about to let that trash back on the shelf

Wow, I've just been reading my mothers keeper and have found it absolutely fascinating. I can completely empathise with where BD is coming from. Writing these sort of memeories down would have taken some guts along with a certain level of uncertainty about whether it was the correct thing to do. I know Bette Davis was an amazing actress but a lot of people at this elite level don't 'switch off' when they are off camera. It is completely plausible that she was as described in BD's book. Give BD a break everyone, I think she's done an amazing job telling her story.

We love you, Miss Bette Davis. Your daughter is going straight to hell, especially for giving oral to her sons. They both told me so.

I am half way through 'My Mothers Keeper' waiting for Bette to actually look or appear to be anything other than I wouldve expected; honest, challenging and mostly highly dignified. I am discovering through BD's utter ignorance that her mother also had an immovable sense of family, loyalty and devotion. BD desperately tries to paint herself as the Martyr to a tyrannical mother where in actual fact she is the victim, I believe, of a paranoid self narcissism whose husband, by her own account, played into that and told her what she wanted to hear. Bette blamed him for division between herself and her daughter-maybe she wasn't completely wrong about that. But more over, Bettes daughter is proving to be as I read on, a whining, self indulgent spoiled brat who couldve really done with a kick up the backside. Running around the Riviera at any age, let alone 16 going to film festivals, NOT WORRYING AT ALL ABOUT MONEY and seeking pleasure freely is a fantasy to nearly all human beings. BD is utterly delusional when she arrogantly describes her mothers questioning of her whereabouts as controlling and motivated by jealousy. BD is cruel in this assumption. Apparently BD is also utterly innocent and a victim of her mothers. What an idiot! And last but not least, I have lost count of how many times BD describes Bettes body language in the quintessential pose of Jane Hudson-feet slightly apart and hands on hips. Talk about exploiting a stereotype! BD people who read this book looking for a story to relate to, adult survivors of child abuse for example, I would assume will be highly offended by your lack of insight, your selfishness, your betrayal not only of your mother, but of your position automatically obtained through being her child which you decided to utterly exploit to hoodwink real victims of abuse into listening to the ramblings of a precocious, bitter, jealous brat.

Well, shame on any daughter who does not have enough respect for the woman who gave her life to keep whatever flaws and family problems they may have had, in the family. The issues B.D. had with her mother would have been better served, in a private manner. Decent people don't air their dirty laundry in public. I feel that to be a true Christian is to forgive. Maybe she has milked her mother's name for all it is worth and so now she is making her money off the name of Christ. For shame!
