My favorite scene in a Jim Thompson novel is the climax of "pop.1280" in which the narrator simultaneously envisions all the many, daily sins in his county (the smallest in Texas) and realizes homicide is so fortright and logical that it is actually one of the smaller sins.
Thompson understands his criminals intimately. Makes me wonder...

I just read The Killer Inside Me and am in the middle of Roughneck. Jim Thompson is an amazing writer. He deals with dark issues such as murder, sex, corruption, and human weaknesses. He is pretty special in the fact that he writes in firts person point of view. This affects us deeply when we are SHOWN how an evil mind works. The great thing about it is that the criminal is not only the main character, but everyone, as it is in real life.
I think Jim Thompson was a really talented and creative writer and everyone should read his novels. I have set myself to read all of his works
