Why is "incest" mentioned in the description of "Jude the Obscure"? While sexual relationships between cousins are considered incestuous in most parts of the United States, they were not forbidden in late 19th century England. I find the use of the word "incest" could give a potential reader an entirely different view of the book, and may, indeed, be off-putting - and that would be a real shame, considering the brilliance of "Jude the Obscure".

no wessex is not a real place in England ..its just n imaginary village created by Hardy..which has all da ideal things.... :)

To answer your question, there are no characters in any of Hardy's novels or short stories named Jennifer or Matthew. I have read all of Hardy's novels and most of his short stories, and I don't remember any characters with these names. However, it is possible that there was a character named Matthew in one of the short stories or poems that I have not read.

I would think that the top reviewer would know how to spell the main character's name right. It's BAthsheba.
