Glen Cook is a great writer (swords and sorcery. If you want to try just 1 book, try Tower of Fear. It's not just the good guys against the bad guys. There are 3 major power factions, 1 guy playing all 3 sides and 2 families caught in the middle. After that, start on the Black Company series--it's all good stuff.
