Jean-Paul Sartre Message Board

Hello. Any help locating this passage will be greatly welcomed. I need to reference it for an artist statement I am writing for an upcoming show.
What I recall, from reading Sartre's Trilogy forty years ago, was a
passage where one of the protagonists is in cafe and hears the strains
of some jazz playing on a gramophone from a nearby apartment. The
moment seems perfect and the music perfect too. As I recall it may
also be a time before the War (WW II) really begins. The protagonist
wonders about holding the moment, freezing the gramophone -- yet it's
absurd-- for if it were to be frozen then the music would end. The
music (and life) only happens because it is in flux.
I know that this is a little vague but I hope that perhaps it will jog the memory of someone who is well versed with the novels. Thank you very much.
