Just finished reading the book. It was wonderful in establishing the setting and the characters were vivid. I kept seeing the movie unravelling before me. Ideal casting: Cameron Diaz as Alysia, Andy Garcia as Jose Antonio, Gael Bernal as Rafael, Roselyn Sanchez as Camilla and Eva Mendes as Modesta.

Lisa has stated that she spent a year in Cuba, so I would think she has done her homework.

Americans who lose thier visa in Cuba can easily leave the country,provided they still have thier passport and thier departing plane ticket.The author did not do her homework.There is prostitution in Cuba just as there is in America,Netherlands, and the Phillipines.Since Cuban women are so desperate to leave the country they see most gringos as a meal ticket and a way out of the country.This mentality is very common among Latino women espescially in Colombia,Brazil and Dom Reb.
