shut up you little ignorant snobs. Pressfield is trying to explore one of the many mysteries of the past. War.
Considering that there are not many primary sources for the Persian Wars, he has given us what is, still now 10 years after it was published, the best account for ancient Greek warfare. The detail is an effort to create an ancient context to draw the readers out of their ignorant 21st century minds. Xeo's personal journey is one of the themes in book.
If you little pubescent yanks cant get a grip on realism and the dense language in the book, then put it down and stop whining about it

i think this book is great and i think its very interesting when diomaache gets raped.. i like it a lot i think steven pressfield is a good author and the kids writing stuff on here like "ohh my rapes so bad" and I DO NOT NEED TO BE EXPOSED TO A MANS ERECTION OR A LITTLE GIRL GETTING RAPED" are strait up faggots. haha you'd have to be a queer to think this book is too bad for someone thats in freaking high school. but i think its a good book i had to do a project on it

Who would put this on a summer reading list unless they were a little weird themself? When you teach , you model behavior , like it or not. Leave the kids alone!

This book is great, but maybe it's too graphic and real for 14 year-olds. I was in the Infantry and I have been to both afgahnistan and Iraq so I can relate to alot of this. freshmen kids either don't know or don't want to know that life is brutal, specially in war. As for the detail I don't blame them for not liking it because when I was younger I din't like those kinds of books either, but I'm sure when they mature they will probably feel different about details.

I also read this for Summer reading(SHP in NJ...wonder if any of the other posters here are from there...) and it was a little too detailed, but in all it was a decent book.

it is too bad that steven didn't put in a picture or two to help assuage the whiney fourteen year old who thought it had "too much detail", poor baby, getting past the cartoon stage with mommies stuffing his face for him must be very tramaatic. Read this wonderful book four times now and still love every letter of every word. Steven is a world class genius when it comes to writing the actual "feel" of a situation. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read and has the guts to allow themselves to be transported to another time and place. Read anything and everything that it he writes and you will see how a true master of the craft handles something as simple and yet as devastating as the printed word .

I had to read this book for my freshman summer reading book (others too) and i have to say, it is the worst book i have ever read in my entire fourteen year old life. The author of ths book should be put out of buisness, if that is possible to do that to an author. Please author, DO NOT PUT SO MUCH DETAIL INTO THE BOOK! IT RUINS THE WHOLE PLOT, I DO NOT NEED TO HAVE THE DETAILS OF A MAN'S ERECTION OR THE RAPE OF A 14 YEAR OLD GIRL!!!!!
