Fiona posts on 12/3/2007 11:29:48 AM Hi my name is Fiona.I think that you are such a great author. But I did not like that in the green book the moths only live for such a short time.In my class we are making maps and taking the information from the book. We are also writing 10 inventions that the people could make on shine.I am not quite done with my map yet so I can not write much.Bye!
Zachary.W. posts on 12/2/2005 11:53:22 AM The Green Book was a excing book because of the ups and downs. Also the moth people were very strange.

Deby Fredericks posts a grand solution on 1/4/2005 1:22:40 PM Depending on whether you are wanting a hands-on activity or a more intellectual one... a) Have the class decide how they would set up their own colony on an alien planet. Have them do the things the colonists did, such as mapping, looking for life, finding food and building materials. You could split the class into teams, each handling one facet. b) You could have the kids design their own "alien houses" using found materials -- things from home, or things you provide such as toilet paper tubes, craft paper, sticks... If you're concerned that parents might "help" a bit much, perhaps do it during class time. c) Have the kids plant a crop of some kind in class -- something easy like radishes or beans -- and see if they thrive. If the vegetables make it, the colony makes it! d) Just have them write about how they would design their own colony (in teams or individually) perhaps with papers being published and posted. e) Or some combination of the above, like writing a plan and then planting the crop and building the house. Hope this helps!
