I read the series some time ago but downloaded the three book editions on kindle. The author note was interesting and there were a few little changes but glad to see that Cat and Victor were still the characters I loved at first sight Other people have brought up the dialogue. Its like you can hear it. I wonder what audio books would sound like.

I found on kindle that the first books in the Rubino series are out in a bundle. Its three books for one price which seemed like a good idea to me since its priced around what you pay for one novel. I bought it after reading the preview and liked it. Halfway into Death of a DJ now and gotta go with others on this list who brought up the dialogue. Funny stuff.

When was the last in ths series published? Having a hard time getting my hands on Cheat the Devil, not in PB or Kindle. I got that anthology with Cake Job and rounded up a few other short novel anthologies by the publisher Worldwide Mystery. Neat concept. Anyway really liked Rubinos writing.

Three of these were passed to me by a friend who thought I'd like 'em. Totally in luv with the Cat and Victor relationship - especially Victor who is a real, flesh and blood male. Somehow old school but very modern.

Last week Entertainment Magazine online did an article about books that would make good TV shows and i put up a post with my 8 pics that included the Cat Austen series and surrpised to see a few people jump on BUT the shocker was that someone said the books actually were optioned!!! I wish i know where i could go to confirm it. Feel weird about trying to email the author.

I do not think there was an amateur sleuth I "liked" as much as I liked Cat Austen. By that I mean, she was the kind of person I did not just admire but also would like to have for a friend and neighbor. What ever happened to these books? Why did they stop after 6 stories? I read so many silly mysteries that still get churned out but have no "meat on the bone". And I also have to say that Victor is a great character, a mix of modern male and old time chilvarous gentleman. He can move next door to me anytime!

After reading this series Victor Cardenas became my favorite modern hero. I always loved Sydney Carton, Mr Darcy, Percy Blakeney but too many of the modern guys leave me cold. Plus the dialogue between him and Cat Austen crackles with fun. Fruitcake was my favorite but having said that I have not found the short one in the anthology.

I also got Raise the Dead from the library and thought it was great. The dialogue could go from having you crack up laughing to giving you the shivers. I thought about it a lot especially when I read about these famous people who go to surrogates or donors to have babies. There are so many possible complications when the kids grow up and this book brought out some of the more sobering one.

Thanks to Sandy and power out there was anything you could do by flashlight like reading so I read a few of these books until we powered up again. Raise the Dead is my favorite but Victor Cardenas is such a great character and looking around at Atlantic City kept wondering WWVD - what would Victor do? I am with other posters who said they fell in love with him. BTW doesn't the author live around the Jersey shore?
