I am new to Wilbur Smith with Quest being the first of his books that I read. I have since read 4 more of his books and can't get enough. What I don't understand is all this negativity toward Quest...I loved it! If you're thinking of not reading it because of what someone else has said then you'll be missing out!

I waited 2 years for the Quest, and nearly didnt buy it cos of all the negatie comments on this site.In the end I had to get it as i have all of his books. And YES its different, But its still WS. Too much sex, easy skip it if you dont like it. Vampires, so what its fiction based on fact. yes it was more mystical, so what I could still picture the red rocks bursting letting the Nile live again. So what taita got a new willy, reckon after 150 years her deserves a bit of pleasure. i also loved the way our Lostris came back. Its not my fav WS but I still will wait for the next book. If after all these years Ws has changed his style, SO WHAT!

Hi Liz,
There are many previous posts re the orders of his books but in any case: Start with When the lion feeds, A sound of thunder, A sparrow falls then burning shore, power of the sword, rage, golden fox, a time to kill. Then go back to Birds of prey, Monsoon, and Blue Horizon. The egyptian series is River God, Seventh scroll, warlock then the quest. The rest are either one offs or the Ballantynes but Id recommend leaving them till youve read the lot above as that will give you most of the best of Wilbur from my point of view. havny read the uest yet but each of the above is excellent and hard to separate. I envy you if you havnt read any of those yet. Be prepared for a rollercoaster of a ride.

im only half way through the book, but ive noticed a few things, hardly any mention of tanus, and didnt lord aquer return to egypt with lostris in river god, in the quest it states he was lost in the swamps, any help on this issue

well folks just finished The Quest, no matter what I still love Wilbur!
This book was different, there were many references that I couldn't help but feel weren't from that era, words that I have no idea if they knew then. Like the references to
vampires??
It was way too supernatural for me, just not realistic and one of the things I love about Wilbur is his ability to make me feel like I'm there. I can picture everything he writes.
I still enjoyed the book but doubt I'd reread it like I've done a million times with all his other books.

Regardless of his recent efforts Wilbur still remains the best for me.
The 8 books from When the lion feeds thru to a Time to die with the courtneys of africa are a must read and the best series of any Ive read. None from Grisham, Clancy, Ludlum, Cussler and many other topliners have captured what Wilbur has for me. I even find Id prefer to re read past ones than keep searching for one that compares.

Isnt it a shame that one idiot can kill a
a message board with some stupid drivel.
However with all the comments on "The Quest" Wilbur Smith novels are still a brilliant read so dont be put off by the comments on one book. Another writer I really enjoy although with a very different style and subject matter is Nelson DeMille.
