I was a 7th grader in San Luis Obispo in @ 1970 and my uncle was Murray Smith of the theater department at Cal Poly. I vividly remember a cast party at their adobe-style house on the edge of campus and a funny gag-gift given to Nevada Rae Barr (by which you were not amused!). Do you remember my Uncle Murray? As a young girl, I just couldn't imagine idolizing anyone more than I did you--I just thought you were amazing. I love your books and I was watching the Ken Burns series on the National Parks and it reminded me of you.

I have two messages: First, I want to rave on about Winter Study. It was a CLIFF_HANGER in more ways than one. It spoke to my own intense childhood fear of wolves ( brought on by stories from Boys Life Magazine read to me by my father) These were vintage issues from the 1920s to the 1940s that he had subscribed to as a boy. He was born in 1910 and was a lone scout. If you ever get the chance check out these serialized stories: Beyond the Dog's Nose and the one with the halfbreed dog-coyote pet named kyaway or some such spelling. These were great stories but they really creeped me out around age 8 when I was in bed with mumps, and he read them to me. Nevada, I think I have read all your Anna Pigeon books. I turn into Anna when I read them, I hate for them to stop, and wait with bated breath for the next one. I have one suggestion. Do a story in HotSprings Arkansas National Park. It would be quite a different kind of park setting for you and I bet you would have a good time, Anna Pigeon, in bringing Hubby Rev. Paul along to this part of the bible belt. You should find some interesting Indian Lore, Pow Wows, Crystal mines you can mine yourself for great Quartz pieces. The place is very artsy, and they have a Hog Ralley every summer, not to mention horse-racing in the spring. In the summer there are festivals in music, film making, art, etc. It is a real different setting for the Rangers.

What is the significance of the "tiny speck of bright Nomex yellow working its way purposefully toward the rising sun" on the last page of Firestorm? I don't get it.

Why are so many folks grinding and grumbling about Hard Truth? The book jacket blurb tells the story line. The title is gritty and relevant to the content. I read it knowing it would not be a romance novel. A good writer brought a "hard truth" into the forefront of the social consciousness. That is what great novelists do.

I was saddened by the content of Hard Truth. We all know these kinds of experiences have happened to our young people in this country and I did not like reading about it in this book. I read all the time I can and yet, this book was disheartening and cruel. This having been said, I do love learning how to hide oneself in the woods and how to be careful in the great outdoors. enjoying and surviving at the same time. I would like to see Anna visiting Mount Rainier in the future.

What is happening with Nevada Barr? It's been almost 20 months since her last book. Did she survive Hurricane Katrina?

Right now (Labor Day) A&E is airing "Firestorm: Last Stand for Yellowstone" and the plot seems identical to Barr's book Firestorm. Even the main character is named Anna. Why then does it claim to be based on the novel "Scorched Earth" by Rocky somebody who happens to be the producer of this movie? How can he rip off Barr's work so blatantly?

I am currently in Romania visiting my dearest friend and our little boy . I have been comming here for six years now and always bring books with me. As I have advanced in years I have discovered a wonderous thing. I no longer have such a great memory ! Now old jokes are once more new and funny. I was much better when I was younger. The fish I caught were bigger. I won the important foot ball game. I can say this is definately the truth now...So few witnesses left. And the most important thing....I can once more enjoy reading the books I used to know by heart . I thank you for the enjoyment I had reading you in the past and the fun it is to read you once more with no clue as to what the end of the story will be. Thank You Jay

The blurb above this link says something about "new and old books that Andrews has written..." Huh? The link says this is a discussion board about Nevada Barr. OK, I am seriously confused now.
