Got it: Margaret Swain, The Needlework of Mary, Queen of Scots. There are also web pages devoted to these tapestries, mainly from the uk.

Thanks to "an embroiderer" for the information. I tried Alibris and got nowhere. If you find your book it would be very helpful to me to know the title. Thanks again.

Re: the question about Murray's reference to Mary's "puzzle embroideries" in The Queen Jade: When Mary was locked up in the Tower by Elizabeth I, she became nearly obsessive about embroidery; in a great many of her pieces she ciphered her name. I think that she also did some lace work that had labyrinthian patterns in them. I have a book somewhere in my house -- I've just been running around madly looking for it but of course can't find it -- which is all about her embroideries. I believe that it is out of print, but perhaps if you search for "embroidery" and "Mary, Queen of Scots" you might pick it up on Alibris or some other on-line book seller.

I just finished reading The Queen Jade and am wondering about the mention of Mary, Queen of Scot's puzzle-embroideries. I searched the net and came up empty handed. Does anyone know what Murray is talking about? Thanks.

Can't we just embrace ourselves in the luxurious gift to us that is Yxta's writing. I mean seriously, for those of us native Angelinos. Who else has come forward with a love for our town, literature, books and bookstores, adventure and a writing style that has us begging for her next offering. I can't keep her books in my house with my kids and neighbors borrowing them. I'm on my third copy of "The Conquest". Yxta, I'm sure teaching at Loyola is fun and all, but we're waiting for your next. And, thank you.

I am reading your book and find it fascinating. I am a retired librarian and book lover. I love the way you write.

Murray's masterpiece has not been written yet. It will be, when she turns away from the Latina mindset. Murray is a great writer, but needs to write about universal themes.
