HI fred.
I tried to post a message, but I THINK my system dropped it, so I will try again. I think I was 13 or 14 when I read your story in my father's stash of magazines, and I have tried to find it off and on ever since. I don't want to over state the case, but that story also started for me a life long interest in what type of intelligence would satisfy a Turing test and be entitled to rights and liberties. Again, thankyou for a very good story.

Gil -- Yes, that was one of the first Berserker stories and has appeared under two titles: Fortress Ship and Without a Thought. It appears in IF, Jan 1963. The story also appears in the book Berserker. The idea for the story came from an article in Scientific American a year or two earlier describing what now would be called AI.

Many years ago I read a 'chinese room' type story where the protagonist
alone in his ship with his pet was facing an enemy. He devised a game his pet could play while the enemy, who I recall to have been a Berserker, tried to ferret out whether there was intelligent life inside the ship. My recollection was that the ship was subjected to some type of radiation that precluded the man from playing the game himself. I have been searching for this story for many years as an early part the AI debate. Was this your story? If so, What was the title?

I've only recently discovered your books and have been enjoying them considerably. One thing though, I hope you will write a grand conclusion to the Berserker series where humanity triumphs. And if you do, would you consider creating a link between that series and the Empire of the East (and all its spin-off series)? I think it would be interesting to have your two major sci-fi/fantasy series connected together in some way. Just a thought. Anyway, keep up the great work. As far as I'm concerned, you have created a lasting corpus of works.

A few years ago New Line Cinema did buy an option on the Berserker series, but they let it drop, as happens to most options. No work was ever started on the movie. Maybe next time.

I was just wondering if anyone knew the status of this project. I read in an interview that Mr. Saberhagen gave that the option for a movie based on the Berserker series had been purchased and a movie was in the works, but have seen nothing about it since.

I didn't realize he had cancer. That is such an evil word. I am glad it seems okay for now. I will keep you all in my thoughts. :)

The Empire of the East is indeed related to the world of the swords books, taking place in the distance past relative to the 1st Book of Swords. The more recent Ardneh's Sword bridges the two series. You should read Empire of the East first, as Ardneh's Sword would otherwise contain spoilers.

Firstly, I have been a fan of the swords series for years. I find it to be one of the most origional concepts for a work of fiction I have read about. Mr. Saberhagen also has a knack for writing charicters that seam very real and round to me.
I do have a question. Are the Empire of the East books a part of this world? I have not read them yet, but I am looking for them now and would like to know if they are a part of the lexicon.
