While the Tobias does not make his life out to be the most horribly abused one to get media attention, he does depict a life that was difficult and one with which he comes to grips. He reaches a crossroad where he has the ability to make the decision to be forever in Concrete or make something more of himself. He chooses the latter. What an enjoyable read with writing that provides the imagination with a vivid, visual look into the mind and life of Tobia Wolff.

I ran across this book in my local, small town library, some miles downstream from the town where Tobias Wolf grew up and which he describes in "This Boy's Life". "In Pharoh's Army" made me realize what a really good writer he is. I was in My Tho at the same time as he was, only I was in Pharoh's Navy. I relived an important part of my life in reading this book. The accuracy of the physical and psychological descriptions of that time and place I can vouch for from my personal experience. Thank you Mr. Wolf. Incidentally, you might want to go back and visit, as I did a few years ago. Physically, it's all so much the same and yet so different, you'd be amazed.
