Having picked the book up from a charity shop in Ipswich and not knowing anything about the author, i was immediately hooked and couldn't put it down.
Great plot and characters, real insight into a suburb of violence, vigilanty justice and desperation.

I wonder about Kirino's treatment of relationships between parents and children. The heroine gives up on her unhappy son, another leaves her small children home alone. A third overlooks her daughter's deceit to obtain money. What is Kireno saying about the Japanese family?

I've jsut read Out. I teach a course on contemporay Asian literature in Singapore, on a voluntary basis. Have decided to include this novel. Love the way it portrays the lives of ordinary Japanese. Would welcome comments from readers. I'm British.

I have just finished the book and it left me wondering if they can make a movie out of it..a movie that would be as good as the novel.

Grim, rivetting, relentless and realistic. The best kind of "noir." I can't bear to finish it because her other novels have not yet been translated. One of the best things about"Out" is that it shows you without fanfare or preaching the working lives of ordinary women and their everyday, taken-for-granted oppression--no geishas here. Also, a startling and unexpected examination of the underbelly of Tokyo life. "Out" is in a class by itself.

I began this book, which was a selection made by my book club, with serious misgivings, but have been pleasantly surprised by it. It moves right along. Although gritty and at times stomach-churning, it is a "thriller" with a message. The best part is the way Kirino merges a good plot with commentary about the status of women in contemporary Japan.

The book finally came - quicker than expected & I was buried in it immediately & was rivetted for a week. I was impressed that a thriller could also be a social document as well. It describes lives of working women putting up with the same old misogyny as Western women. Natsuo Kirino writes very well & is a great story teller, & very likely the translator complements the novelist's style - but how would I know? I don't speak Japanese, but I was very pleased I'd sent for it.

This book was REALLY good...it made me not want to put it down...so many things going on..it was really good.
im trying to find Soft Cheeks..another book by Natsuo, but i cant find it...HELP?
