Krepta posts on 5/16/2005 2:48:41 AM I know, this is a place where people post messages about BOOKS, but, to me Games tell stories that are just as exciting, and immersive, as books. And besides, I don't know any other way to comment about Ricardo Pinto, creator of one of my all-time favorite games, Cybercon III, since I have yet to read his books. Anyway, I wish I could get ahold of Ricardo Pinto, or one of the other programmers who contributed to that game, but this looks like my only option. Cybercon III was originaly created for the Amiga computer system, but I never saw that version until a couple years ago. The version I played and loved, though it was probably the same in most respects, was for DOS based PCs. The i386 to be more precise, was the only computer type capabable of running the program the way it was designed, i486 being only slightly too much. Newer computers just screw it up, they are too fast. LOL :) Anyway, I loved that game when I got it as a birthday gift from my grandparents, who found it in some bookstore I'm sure. A couple years later the orgiginal disk became corrupt, without my knowledge, a fact that I found out when the copy installed on my hard drive became corrupt and I found the original disk and tried to reinstall it. Much to my dismay at the time, I found I had lost my precious game. The disk and the box and other things were there, physicaly intact, but the data was gone. I tried various methods of data restoration, but like most diskettes, this one was too damaged to restore anything from. So I set out on a search for the creators of the game, which failed again and again to turn up anything. I couldn't find the company that created the original Amiga version, nor the company that distributed the PC version. I couldn't find the PC game in any store anywhere, not even the Trade stores had it. I finaly gave up on the Legal methods of procurement and tried to find it in the dark underground, or so I thought of it at the time, terrified that I would be caught and sent to prison for my crime. I found Cybercon III, for PC, and downloaded it, but it was Cracked so that you wouldn't need to use any kind of special codes to open doors and stuff. This was pretty great for a little while, but I missed useing the Code-Wheel too much, so I started doing that again, ignoring the ability to cheat. But I still wanted to find the Original, un-cracked, version of the game. I searched Ebay, and found the Amiga version, and purchased it. It now sits in my room, untouched, because I have no Amiga. If I could find a working Amiga that will run the game, and create backup copies of the disk, I would be very happy about this whole thing. But, I have yet to find an Amiga that won't break my back, money-wise. Collectors love trading rare items for lots of money, but I'm not a collector for money's sake, I just love that game. I'm obsessed. I would really love to purchase the original PC version, or somehow find a copy of the uncracked program. But Pirates love cracking games, so they don't share what I'm looking for. It's thanks to my obsession with Cybercon III that I became a Pirate. Now I'm obsessed with finding something Pirates don't share. Ironic. Krepta.
