michael lives in london because if you think about it throughout the book stephen is always mentioning the war and how it illuminates the sky. there is also a bridge where a train runs over it and they were only in london in those days or in busy towns. besides there are a load of homeless people living around the corner from the close and there were no homeless people in villages only in towns so that they could get money from the richer.

I am sorry but you are wrong he takes a train to his village after he gets to london so it is clear he lives in a village

while reading the book review of Spies on this site, i noticed that it said that Stephen's home was in a small village. this is not true as the book clearly states that he tells his family he is returning to London, where he grew up. although the book does at times portray the feeling that he lives in a small village, it is clear that he doesn't. London is split into areas and communities rather than being a city in an annonomus way. Stephen lives in one of these communities, but never the less, in London. i just thought i should correct this before anyone was led astray when studying the book as i am doing.
